The United States has a lot to offer in terms of fantastic routes that you can explore with your motorcycle. From the winding and seemingly endless coastal highways to the roads that fit a little too close against the sides of tall mountains, North America has a huge variety of motorcycle routes to set the stage for your next adventure.

The roads that run along plateaus can be just as inviting as the ones with higher altitudes. Basically, for die-hard motorcycle fans, the journey and adventure are never-ending.

Natchez Trace Parkway, Detour in Lewis County, Tennessee

The Natchez Trace Parkway is a highly arresting route that covers 444 miles and offers nearly endless expanses of scenery. Its 10,000 year-old history is as thrilling and exciting as the road itself. This footpath was once treaded by Native Americans as they ventured on the hunt for bison, and don't be surprised if you see ghost towns and Civil War grounds. There is a speed limit of 50 mph, you know that you will come back for more.

San Juan Skyway, Southwest Colorado

This mesmerizingly beautiful All-American road stretches 23 miles southwest of Colorado and cuts through the San Juan Mountains. While the route itself is absolutely sensational, you'll find the historic mining camps and national parks to be mesmerizing as well. Even as the road climbs higher and higher to 11,000 feet towards the top of the Red Mountain Pass, the numerous ghost towns are hard to miss.

Pig Trail Scenic Byway, Arkansas Highway 23, Arkansas

The Pig Trail Scenic Byway stretches 19 miles and is a part of Arkansas Highway 23. As a fixture of the Ozark National Forest, it’s an amalgamation of undulating hills and countless drop-offs. With the densely wooded Boston Mountains as a backdrop, you will have access to all sorts of recreational activities. These include but are certainly not limited to: camping, kayaking and whitewater rafting (if you choose to break the thrill of the ride).

Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

The Skyline Drive is a stunningly scenic 105 mile-long route that has 75 overlooks along the Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont. With its breathtaking views and outstanding waterfalls tucked along the way, It’s not surprise why the road sees over 2 million visitors annually. The Skyline Drive is the only public road that runs through Shenandoah National Park. The speed limit is set at 35mph due to the wildlife, traffic and curves.

Blue Ridge Parkway, Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia & North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469 mile-long road that makes its way through Virginia and North Carolina. As you navigate the twists and turns and ups and downs on this parkway, you'll why its speed limit is set at 45mph! There are no gas stations on the route itself so if you do need a fill-up, you’ll have to exit the highway.

Twisted Sisters, Texas Hill Country, Texas

As its name suggests, the Twisted Sisters isn’t just one road but a weave of Ranch Roads 335, 336, and 337 in Texas. While these uniquely thrilling roads are nowhere near as challenging as the Tail of the Dragon, the Twisted Sisters isn't recommended for amateur riders. The Twisted Sisters is essentially a 100-mile long loop that winds its way through the hills and ranches of Texas. Along this route, you'll find some exciting attractions such as the Lost Maples State Natural Area, the Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop, Stonehenge II and the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum.

Cherohala Skyway, Tellico Plains to Robinville, Tennessee & North Carolina

The Cherohala Skyway is a 43-mile long National Scenic Byway that runs through Nantahala National Forest and the Cherokee National Forest. Otherwise known as the Overhill Skyway, The Cherohala Skyway is riddled with luxurious curves and reaches an elevation of over 5,400 feet. You won’t find too much traffic along this route after dark, and the road is particularly treacherous in the winter. You will find a number of vistas, recreational areas and stunning views as you cruise along.

Tail of the Dragon, US Route 129, Tennessee

The Tail of the Dragon is an 11 mile-long stretch that is also called Deal’s gap. Many motorcyclists will tell you this is one of the best motorcycling roads in North America. It has over 300 curves, some of which are so sharp that you can actually see the grains of the road's surface as you countersteer your wheels. There is a particularly challenging 2-lane stretch of blacktop highway that takes you through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Pacific Coast Highway, From Orange County to Mendocino County, California

Also called California State Route 1, the Pacific Coast Highway is undoubtedly one of the most scenic motorcycle roads in the United States. What makes it so notable is that the road runs through Big Sur. A large stretch of this road hugs the coastline and has hairpin twists and turns with sudden sharp drop-offs. It can be quite a challenge to ignore the foaming waves and the stunning redwoods as you keep your eyes on the road.

Beartooth Highway, Wyoming

Beartooth Highway is nothing less than the ultimate adventure. It’s at an elevation of almost 11,000 feet and you can traverse switchbacks and sweeping corners while spotting wildlife along the way. This is one road trip you have to prepare for; The Beartooth Highway can never be an impromptu spin on your wheels. These roads are off-limits in the winter months, but even in the summer, the weather can be quite unpredictable.
